DUBAI LANDMARK

Dubai
Evolved from an international hub and meeting point between East and West, Dubai has now grown into a solid dynamic world-scale city. As with all world cities, unity in diversity forms the basis of its existence and success. It is recognized as an international, open and welcoming city with unlimited opportunities. The landmark reflects this international openness.

Context
Situated on the crossroads of the coastline, desert and old and new Dubai, Za'abeel Park offers the perfect location for the construction of a tall landmark. Not only in terms of visibility. It is also ideally located to offer views onto the city's diversity.

Park
The public landmark is set within Za'abeel Park and forms a vertical extension and transition of the park. The tall-emblem structure forms a cornerstone for the park. By framing vertical space, rather than creating a solid high-rise structure, the park is extended upwards into the building.

Concept
The design concept departs from two premises. The intention to make a building that is an added-value to the park and the park-experience. And how to tackle the problem of creating an emblematic landmark that can distinguish itself in a context of high-rise structures that all have this same ambition.

Building
The discrepancy between the demand for a high-rise building and the little amount of actual program implies a different design-approach. Structure will be the determining visual factor. This is turned into a virtue. By creating a perimeter of intertwining cloth-like concrete ribbons, the landmark establishes its unique identity by being a void between a context of solids. A number of very diverse vertical circulation-routes and observation decks give the public dazzling views over Dubai. Lobby, administrative functions and parking are situated on ground level. The main programmatic elements (conference, café and children's library) are concentrated in the mid-level volume. On top a sky-deck is located in between the ribbons. The whole functions as a vertical public space.
